Performance practice

Find what makes it slow.

The slow job, pipeline or hot path your business waits on. We measure it, explain it, then fix it against the number: code, queries, I/O, concurrency or infrastructure.

  1. 01 / 03 Baseline

    Measure the whole run.

We time the slow path end to end, including the parts that are not the database, and write the baseline down: the metric, how it is measured, and the variance across runs.

  2. 02 / 03 Findings

    Name what costs the most.

Each finding is traced to code, a query or a setting, and ranked by the time or cost it recovers. If we find nothing worth fixing, the report says so.

  3. 03 / 03 Fix

    Fix it against the number.

The fix is a second fixed-price SOW, measured against the baseline the diagnosis set, with a benchmark plan so the gain is proven rather than claimed.

One 41-minute run, span by span. The costliest span is marked, then each fix shortens the run.

What breaks

It got slow with volume.

A database health check tunes indexes. This is an application-level diagnosis across code, queries, I/O, concurrency and infrastructure, for the case where the database is only part of the answer. What we usually find:

  • An N+1 pattern that grew with the data.
  • A query plan that changed with volume, or an unindexed scan.
  • Work that runs in series when it could run in parallel.
  • Output written one row at a time.
  • A fix that was tried without a baseline, so nobody knows what it changed.

The time each fix recovers per run, against the 41-minute run traced above. The roadmap then orders them by effort.

The fix, as a second fixed-price SOW, measured against the baseline the diagnosis set.

    Hand over

The fix, the benchmark and the baseline numbers move to your team, so the next change is measured the same way.

Most likely

A growth-linked database term: an unindexed scan, an N+1 pattern, or a query plan that changed with volume. Fixable, and the diagnosis quantifies how much of the baseline it is.

Measure this before you call anyone

  1. Write down the baseline: the metric, how you measure it, three runs, and the variance.
  2. Get one end-to-end trace or profile of a full run, not a single query.
  3. Find a way to run the path outside production with realistic data, even a subset.
  4. Re-run the previous fix attempt with the baseline measurement so you know what it changed.

Illustrative example, not a client's data.

Record

Proven on a 27-hour job.

Our principal, Rey Narvaez, delivered these results in regulated production before Aripone was formed.

  • 27h → 8h

A regulated calculation job cut from 27 hours to 8 per run, so it can run three times as often.

  • 30%

About 30% of the database load removed from a production platform.
